Character Names and Film Titles

Character Names

When it came time to choosing my Characters I simply brainstormed all the different types of characters I could analyse. For example I wanted the Film crew to all have relatively normal names as they should reflect the average University student and also as they aren't all formally introduced in the Trailer their names wouldnt't really play a significant role. I decided to keep the actors own names, which made it a little less confusing during filming!

'Larry' - The director and leader of the group. He is dominant, arrogant and assertive, he is also the first to spot any sight of the demon.
'Holly'- The 'dumb blonde' and 'sacrificial lamb' within the trailer. She is bubbly, full of energy and also the first of the characters to be killed.
'Joe' - The Joker of the crew. He is careless and reckless and can usually be found trying to scare the other members of the crew.
'Claire' - The interlectual member of the crew. She is constantly warning the other members that there is something wrong with the student halls. I have chosen her as my final girl to follow similar codes and conventions as she is not reckless within the trailer and is by far the most intelligent.

Ideas for the main character of the murdered student:

'Emma'
'Karen'
'Sarah'
'Megan'
'Jessica'
'Shannon'
'Katie'

I have chosen to use the name Katie as it is an incredibly popular and modern name in which the target audience can relate to. Because it is so normal, this will add to the scare appeal of the narrative as my target audience will feel that if something as awful as this can happen to a normal girl then it could also happen to them.

Film Titles

When it came to deciding a suitable name for my film, I started to look at existing Supernatural horror films to find inspiration. I then looked back to my GCSE work in which I produced three perfume adverts. I remember googling different names and identities when I came across Boss Femme. A lightbulb went off in my head which made me wonder if I would be able to use a Typical horror phrase but translate it into another language for a more gothic effect. For example:

Devil - Diablous 'Latin'
Terror - Terrore 'Latin'
Demon - Daemonium 'Latin'

However, I wanted the title to reflect more about Katie's story and why she is so vengeful and horrific. As the narrative follows her entry into University and her death, the audience will feel like they know her and may feel some sort of sympathy for her.

'Vengence'
'Katie's Story'
'No Proof'
'The Unwanted'
'Tresspass'
'The Death of Katie Collins'
'The Demon'
'Daemonium'

I have decided to use the title of The Unwanted as I feel it sums up what the narrative is all about. Katie was always apprehensive about University and just at the moment she begins to enjoy herself her innocent life is taken leaving her without a future and a chance to live the life shes always wanted. Katie then feels the film crews unwanted attention so she feels that the halls are her dominium and that no one shall tresspass it.

Stories in the Media that have Influenced Me

Meredith Kercher

The murder of Meredith Kercher occurred in Perugia, Italy, on 1 November 2007. Kercher, aged 21 at the time of her death, was a British university exchange student from Coulsdon, south London. She was found dead on the floor of her bedroom with stab wounds to the throat. Some of her belongings were missing, including cash, two credit cards, two cell phones, and her house keys.
Rudy Guede, an Ivory Coast native raised in Perugia, was convicted in October 2008 of having sexually assaulted and murdered Kercher, and was sentenced to 30 years, reduced on appeal to 16 years in December 2009. Also charged were Amanda Knox, an American exchange student and flatmate of Kercher, and Knox's then-boyfriend, Raffaele Sollecito, an Italian student. Knox and Sollecito were convicted of sexual assault and murder in December 2009, and sentenced to 26 and 25 years respectively.

Death of two students in Mississipi (March 2012) Yahoo News

STARKVILLE, Miss. (AP) — Mississippi Gov. Phil Bryant on Sunday expressed his sorrow at the shooting deaths of two college students in the state over the weekend.
Late Saturday, 21-year-old John Sanderson of Madison, Miss., was shot to death in a Mississippi State University dormitory, though the killing appears to be isolated, according to university officials.
Early Sunday, a 19-year-old freshman at Jackson State University died from being shot in the face and killed at an off-campus apartment pool party in Jackson. Police identified the victim as Nolan Ryan Henderson III of Atlanta.
Bryant said in a statement that he and his wife Deborah were "saddened to learn that Mississippi lost two college students this weekend." He said he's spoken with university leaders and instructed the state public safety commissioner to assist in the investigations.
"Those perpetuating these crimes will be apprehended and held accountable," he said. "Mississippi does not take these instances lightly, and rest assured, we will continue to provide a safe learning environment for students at all our Mississippi College and University campuses."
At Mississippi State, university president Mark Keenum said in a statement on the school's website Sunday that the killing of Sanderson was the first time a student had been shot on the campus. Keenum said officials could reveal few other details because of the ongoing investigation.
University spokeswoman Maridith Geuder said police received a call about the shooting at Evans Hall around 10 p.m. Saturday. Police were on the scene within a minute. Sanderson was taken to Oktibbeha County Hospital, where he died.
Three male suspects fled the building in a blue Crown Victoria, officials said. No arrests had been made Sunday.
Shortly after the shooting, the university began sending a series of text message alerts to students. Police officers stepped up patrols to make sure the campus was safe, Keenum said.
The four-story Evans Hall holds about 300 male students and is located on the north side of campus. The campus of about 20,000 students is located in a rural area in the northeastern part of the state, about 125 miles northeast of Jackson.
The school's website says the campus is located in a low-crime area, and that emergencies are rare.
Within a few hours, Jackson police say a freshman at Jackson State University was killed.
Police spokeswoman Colendula Green said officers early Sunday found the body of Henderson lying on a walkway inside the Palisades Apartments.
Henderson reportedly lived on campus but was attending a pool party at the apartment complex. He was shot one time.
Green said Sunday evening that details of what happened were sketchy and that police did not have a motive or suspect. JSU students had planned a vigil for Sunday evening.
Hank Bounds, the state's commissioner of higher education, said in a statement Sunday that both deaths were "senseless tragedies and our sympathies go out to each of their families."
But Bounds stressed that university campuses are "very safe, with many precautions taken and systems in place to protect students." He praised Mississippi State for its "swift action and communication to students and the university community."
The commissioner said both universities have counseling centers and other resources available to assist students deal with the tragedies.

 Murder of Rachel McLean

On the evening of 13 April 1991, Tanner was due to arrive in Oxford by train at 6pm. 19-year-old McLean went to meet him at the station. Discovering that the train had been delayed, she returned home. At around 7.30pm, Tanner arrived at the house by taxi. The following day was FA Cup semi-finals day in football, and McLean and Tanner, an avid Nottingham Forest fan, planned to spend a lazy day at home. She studied in the front room while he watched the game on television. Afterwards, the couple were seen by neighbours outside the house at around 4.30pm, which would prove to be the last time McLean was seen alive.
Later that evening, Tanner strangled Rachel, then forced her head face down and tied a ligature around her neck.In his confession, Tanner told detectives that he spent several hours looking for a hiding place for the body in the house. It took police searchers seventeen days to locate the body hidden in an eight-inch-high gap at the back of a cupboard under the stairs, crammed with household junk. After emptying the cupboard's contents, Tanner had dragged McLean's body, clothed in silky ski pants and a T-shirt, from the adjacent bedroom, along the hall, and into the recess under the floor. He then crawled along under the hallway to hide the body under the floorboards of her bedroom.

My Ideal Director

Oren Peli

Oren Peli started out as a computer software programmer and his first movie was Paranormal Activity. He took a stab at directing, aware of how to utilize filmmaking technology and confident that he could direct a movie that dealt a lot with technology.
Peli moved into his first house all alone and without family nearby. Peli would hear creaks and knocks without having anyone around and it gave him the idea to make a movie about the weird noises you may hear in your home. Paranormal Activity came about with the idea that someone would have cameras running all over a house while the family slept to catch what was going on at night in the house.

After the success of Paranormal Activity, Peli began to play with the idea of doing similar low-budget horror films in order to capture audiences in a new and unique way. Peli was stuck on the idea of doing films in an "old-style" way.Peli and his production team approached director  and writer  with their idea; it only took five months for Peli and his collective team to get the film rolling. While Insidious was not shot in the characteristic Blair Witch-style, it incorporated some classic suspense elements from the earlier eras of horror films. Peli was mostly present in the post-production of this film, having handed over full creative control to Wan and Whannell; his formula of low-budget meets classic horror once again hit box offices with a strong positive response from audiences.

Practise Shots - 'Ghost/Demon'

I wanted the look of my protagonist to be haunting, chilling and frightening enough to satisfy the expectations of my target audience as they are the market in which I want to appeal to. I did not want to insult their intelligence and tastes by developing a character which looked fake or cliched so I decided that in order to achieve a realistic but believable look, I had to research into other female supernatural demons/ghosts to identify what makes their characters so terrifying without the need for the big Hollywood special effects!

Here are some of the pictures taken of Katie when she has become a demon. A noticeable change in chracter is in the actors poses as she leaves her pure and innocent soul behind and replaces it with a sinister and alluring creature.

I took these pictures using my Casio 12 megapixel camera and shiftied the settings to achieve a more authentic looking shot, they are fuzzy and partially unclear as I wanted them to look as if these are unexplained mysteries and to see what the quality would look like in a different light setting

I wanted to capture the shots in dim lighting to reperesent the unexplained sighting of her. I love the fact that amongst the pale make up under the provocative and revealing black dress, her natural red hair is vibrant allowing the audience to identify the shift in roles and to remind the audience that this is the same girl who saldy now is soul less and forever in pain and suffering.

Practise Shots - 'Katie'

For Katie, I really wanted to dress her in an outfit that would help bring her out of her shell and allow her to feel alot more confident. This can be seen in her 'partying costume' whereby she satisfies the typical horror convention of the sacrificial lamb, for example an attractive girl who is used purely for the entertainment and desire of a male audience.
